The next MILObs seminar will take place on 27 May, starting at 2.30pm, in a hybrid format. The session, which will take place in the Sala de Atos of the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho (free entry) and will be broadcast online on Zoom (registration here), will feature guest researcher Fran Martín, from the University of Málaga. The seminar is entitled ‘The Role of Journalists and Journalism in Media Literacy’.
The session aims to reflect on the figure of the journalist as media educator, analysing their strengths – such as mastery of journalistic language, news ethics and the ability to translate complexity – as well as their weaknesses, including the lack of pedagogical training and the lack of institutional recognition of this role. Based on this hybrid figure between communicator and educator, spheres of professional action and avenues for entrepreneurship will be identified, both in formal (schools, universities) and non-formal contexts (community media, collaborative projects, digital initiatives).
Concrete examples of educommunicative projects led by journalists will be presented, which combine narrative practices, critical thinking and citizen participation, with the aim of empowering audiences and strengthening democracy. This talk seeks to open up a space for interdisciplinary dialogue on how to rethink the role of journalism not only as a transmitter of information, but also as a catalyst for critical and media citizenship.
Fran Martín has a PhD in Journalism. He is currently a lecturer in the Department of Journalism at the University of Malaga, where he teaches media literacy at undergraduate and master’s level.
