The next Permanent Seminar on Postcolonial Studies will be held on March 17, at 3 pm, through Zoom. “Does Africa Exist? Notes on the object of African studies” is the topic Elísio Macamo will explore.
The presentation addresses epistemological and methodological aspects in producing knowledge about Africa. It discusses the conditions of possibility of knowledge, suggesting that the object of African studies is the “theory of knowledge” within which knowledge about Africa is established. This argument contextualises the debates on decolonisation and postcolonialism through their methodological articulation.
Elísio Macamo is a sociology and African studies professor at the University of Basel, Switzerland. He is Mozambican, with education in Mozambique, England and Germany in two areas, namely translation and interpretation (diploma in Mozambique, MA in England) and sociology, anthropology and African literature in English language (MA in sociology and social policies in London, PhD in general sociology, anthropology and African literature in Bayreuth, Germany, and aggregation in general sociology and development sociology in Bayreuth).
