[New deadline] Vista: Call for papers on Advertising and Visual Culture

Between March 22 and June July 15, the call for papers for the Vista on “Advertising and Visual Culture” is open.

Thematic editors: Silvana Mota-Ribeiro (Universidade do Minho, Portugal), Francisco Mesquita (Universidade Fernando Pessoa, Portugal) and Paulo Cunha (ESPM, Brasil).

Advertising has been particularly explored in communication sciences. It is increasingly relevant in the broad field of visual culture, aesthetics and visualities, visual studies, semiotics and image analysis in its many representations.

The multimodal approach to advertising texts has indeed proved the need for reflection on how the visual mode of advertising connects with the verbal but, most importantly, emancipates from it. Thus, it discloses research perspectives focusing on advertising as a form of communication in today’s visual culture and as constructed by and builder of aesthetic and artistic imaginaries at the intersection of visual arts, design and visual communication.

In this thematic section of Vista, we invite scholars to submit (full-length, in text format) articles, book reviews, interviews and visual projects that address the relevance of advertising in visual culture and, in the same vein, the different forms of visuality in advertising.

Special attention will be given to proposals focusing on the following themes:

  • Advertising, design, image and other pluralities;
  • Advertising, artificial intelligence and “digitalities”;
  • Advertising and the speed of complex time — contemporary narratives;
  • Advertising, mirror-reflection, semiotics, rhetoric and cognitive processes;
  • Advertising and the new generations;
  • Dialogues marketing, advertising, and market.

Submission (full manuscript): from March 22 to June July 15
Journal publication date: continuous edition (July to December 2023)

The manuscripts may be submitted in English or Portuguese. Papers selected for publication will be translated into Portuguese or English and must be published in both languages.

Vista is an open-access academic journal, following demanding peer-review standards based on a double-blind review process. After submission, the papers will be forwarded to two reviewers, previously invited to evaluate them according to their academic quality, originality and relevance to the journal’s objectives and scope.
