Webinar ‘Verso e Reverso: Rereading and reinventing the work of Luís de Camões ’

To mark Camões Day (10 June), the Virtual Museum of Lusophony (University of Minho) and CICANT (Lusófona University) are promoting the webinar ‘Verso e Reverso: Rereading and reinventing the work of Luís de Camões’, which will take place on 18 June at 5pm (Portugal time), via the zoom platform, at the following link

The event will feature speeches by Lurdes Macedo from Lusófona University (Portugal) and special guest Maria-Benedita Basto from Sorbonne University (France). The moderator will be Isabel Macedo (University of Minho).

The webinar will open with a brief analysis by Lurdes Macedo of Jorge de Sena’s visit to Mozambique in 1972, seen as an act of contestation against colonialism and a proposal for re-reading Camões, and then Maria-Benedita Basto will present the work As Quybyrycas (1972), by Frey Joannes Garabatus, published for the first time in what was then Lourenço Marques. Presented as a ‘continuation’ of Camões’ Os Lusíadas and centred on the defeat of Alcácer-Quibir, this work, with a preface by Jorge de Sena, is highlighted by Maria-Benedita Basto as fundamental for the decolonisation of the Portuguese imperial imaginary.
