Start of the 19th IBERCOM conference

The 19th IBERCOM, the Congress of Ibero-American Communication Studies, gets underway today, 6 July, with the theme

‘Tensions, global reconfigurations and counter-hegemonic activism’. The four-day the event, which brings together around 300 participants, is organised by CECS in partnership with ASSIBERCOM and SOPCOM, centring on a proposal for debate regarding conflicts between theoretical paradigms, centre-periphery relations in the production of knowledge, and the role of the media and communication practices in the (re)configuration of the public, political and cultural spheres of Ibero-American countries.

In the year marking the 25th anniversary of CECS and the 40th anniversary of the first IBERCOM congress, Braga will be the meeting place for researchers, lecturers and students to reflect on the role of activism, alternative media and counter-hegemonic communication practices as spaces for resistance, creation and social transformation. The plenary sessions will feature Ana Amoróns Pons, Cicilia Peruzzo, Dorismilda Flores-Márquez, Fábio Ribeiro, Isabel Ruiz-Mora, João Figueira, José Bragança de Miranda, Madalena Oliveira, Margarida Maria Khroling Kunsch, Moisés Lemos Martins, Paulo Serra, Raul Fuentes Navarro, Rosa Franquet, Ronzângela Florczak de Oliveira and Xosé Lopes Garcia.

In addition to the plenary sessions, there will be book and poster presentations, as well as a social and cultural programme including the conference dinner and the event ‘Braga between Memory and Power: A Guided Tour from a Counter-hegemonic and Decolonial Perspective’. The academic programme, which features 217 papers, comprises 42 in-person parallel sessions and 10 online sessions (taking place on the final day, 9 July), as part of the conference’s 14 thematic sessions.

The opening session (6 July) will take place at 10.00 am in Auditorium B1 of the Pedagogical Complex II, and will feature speeches by Pedro Arezes, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Minho; Madalena Alves, President of the Foundation for Science and Technology; Moisés de Lemos Martins, President of ASSIBERCOM; Ana Paula Marques, President of the Institute of Social Sciences; and Teresa Ruão, member of the executive committee of SOPCOM – the Portuguese Association of Communication Sciences.
